Not a caper movie, although we do see a fair share of bank heists. This film is really a character study of low-rent criminals (and cops), the most weary of the lot being played by a paunchy and sympathetic Robert Mitchum. As you aptly point out, the film isn't really about this or that specific criminal act, it's about Eddie Coyle. But, not withstanding the specifics of the origin novel, but only based on what we actually see and know in the last car scene in the Film, does Eddie really die? Or, in the cover of night, is his death faked by Peter Boyle's character?

A paradigm shift in crime novels circa 1970, and Higgins never wrote anything else that measured up to it. The key is in the title: Eddie doesn't have any friends.

I fully agree, excellent comment, I"ll admit I hadn't made the connection bedtween friendless Eddie Coyle and the title of the film.
